Read the running balance

1

Start with the current balance

Use it as the result, then work through the entries that produced it.

2

Read each row

Date and description identify the event; Charge increases what is owed, Credit reduces it, and Balance shows the amount after that row.

3

Trace the source

Choose Billing to review invoices or Payments to review money received when an entry needs explanation.

Things worth knowing

  • Account Summary explains movement over time; Billing and Payments contain the underlying records.
  • A credit balance and an amount owed have opposite meanings—check the labels and sign before explaining the account.
